Privacy Policy

Version 2 · Effective 20 September 2026

1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how This is Your Life ("we", "us") collects, uses, and protects your personal data when you use our memorial platform ("the Service"). We are committed to protecting your privacy and complying with the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018.

Last updated: 20 September 2026

2. What We Collect

2.1 Information You Provide

  • Name and email address — when creating a Memorial or contributing content.
  • Memorial Content — biographies, photographs, audio, video, and memories you upload.
  • Contributor details — name, email, and relationship when sharing memories.

2.2 Information Collected Automatically

  • Usage data — pages visited, features used, device type.
  • Payment data — processed by Base44 Payments (powered by Wix); we do not store card details.

3. How We Use Your Data

  • To create, host, and maintain Memorial pages.
  • To notify Memorial owners of new contributions.
  • To process payments and manage subscriptions.
  • To provide customer support.
  • To improve the Service.

4. Legal Basis

We process your data under the following lawful bases:

  • Performance of a contract — to provide the Memorial service you've requested.
  • Legitimate interests — to operate and improve the Service.
  • Consent — for non-essential communications, which you can withdraw at any time.

5. Sharing Your Data

  • Base44 Payments (Wix) — to process payments securely.
  • Email provider — to send notifications about contributions and Memorial updates.
  • Legal authorities — if required by law.
  • We do not sell your data to third parties.

6. Data Retention

  • Memorial Content is retained for the lifetime of the Memorial.
  • Contributor emails are retained for notification purposes and may be deleted on request.
  • Payment records are retained for 7 years for tax and accounting purposes.

7. Your Rights

Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:

  • Access your personal data.
  • Rectify inaccurate data.
  • Erase your data (subject to Memorial ownership considerations).
  • Restrict or object to processing.
  • Data portability.
  • Withdraw consent at any time.

To exercise these rights, please contact us.

8. Special Considerations — Deceased Persons

  • Memorial Content about a deceased person is not "personal data" under GDPR in most circumstances.
  • However, we treat all Memorial Content with respect and sensitivity.
  • Family members may request removal of specific Content by contacting us.

9. Cookies & Analytics

9.1 Essential Cookies

We use essential cookies to operate the Service, including keeping you signed in to your account. These cookies are necessary for the Service to function and cannot be disabled.

9.2 Analytics Cookies

We use optional Google Analytics cookies to understand how visitors use our public pages. Analytics is off by default — no analytics cookies are set and no data is sent to Google until you explicitly accept.

We use Google Consent Mode v2 (basic mode). When you accept analytics cookies:

  • Only analytics_storage is granted. Advertising storage (ad_storage, ad_user_data, ad_personalization) is permanently denied and never activated.
  • Page views are recorded manually for a limited set of public pages only. We do not use automatic Enhanced Measurement, session recording, or form tracking.

9.3 What We Do Not Track

  • Memorial pages are never tracked. Visits to individual memorial or life story pages are excluded from analytics entirely, regardless of your consent choice.
  • Admin and account pages are never tracked.
  • We do not record query strings, page hashes, or personal data in page URLs. Page locations are sanitised to origin and path only.
  • We do not use IP-based user identification, cross-device tracking, or advertising cookies.

9.4 Controlling Analytics Cookies

You can manage your analytics preferences at any time using the Cookie preferences button displayed on the website. When you withdraw consent, we immediately deny analytics storage and delete any Google Analytics cookies on your device.

See our separate Cookie Policy for full details.

10. Children's Privacy

The Service is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be notified to Memorial owners. A version history is available on this page.

12. Contact

If you have questions about this Privacy Policy, please contact us.
