Cookie Policy

Version 1 · Effective 20 September 2026

1. Introduction

This Cookie Policy explains how This is Your Life ("we", "us") uses cookies and similar technologies on our website and memorial platform ("the Service"). It explains what cookies we use, how they work, and how you can control them.

Last updated: 20 September 2026

2. What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files stored on your device when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites work efficiently and to provide information to site owners. Cookies do not identify you personally; they store information about your visit that helps us improve your experience.

3. Types of Cookies We Use

3.1 Essential Cookies

These cookies are necessary for the Service to function. They enable core functionality such as keeping you signed in to your account and maintaining your session. Essential cookies cannot be disabled — without them, the Service would not work.

3.2 Analytics Cookies (Optional)

We use optional Google Analytics cookies to understand how visitors use our public pages so we can improve the Service. Analytics cookies are off by default. No analytics cookies are set and no data is sent to Google until you explicitly accept them.

3.3 Advertising Cookies

We do not use advertising cookies. Advertising storage (ad_storage), ad user data (ad_user_data), and ad personalization (ad_personalization) are permanently denied and never activated.

4. Google Consent Mode v2

We implement Google Consent Mode v2 in basic mode. This means:

  • When you first visit our site, analytics_storage is denied by default. No analytics data is collected.
  • When you accept analytics cookies, only analytics_storage is granted. Advertising-related consent signals remain permanently denied.
  • When you withdraw consent, analytics_storage is immediately denied again and any Google Analytics cookies on your device are deleted.

5. What We Track

When you have accepted analytics cookies, we record page views manually for a limited set of public pages only. This includes pages such as our home page, about page, and gift information pages.

We do not use:

  • Automatic Enhanced Measurement — we do not automatically track page views, scrolls, outbound clicks, file downloads, form interactions, or video engagement.
  • Session recording — we do not record or replay your browsing sessions.
  • Form tracking — we do not track form field interactions or submissions.

6. What We Do Not Track

  • Memorial pages — visits to individual memorial or life story pages are never tracked, regardless of your consent choice. Memorial subjects' names, page titles, and any identifying information are never sent to Google Analytics.
  • Admin and account pages — pages related to account management, the admin portal, and the memorial editor are never tracked.
  • Query strings and page hashes — we never record URL query parameters or fragment identifiers. Page locations are sanitised to origin and path only.
  • Personal data in page URLs — we manually define page titles and locations to prevent personal data from being included in analytics hits.
  • IP-based user identification — we do not use IP addresses to identify individuals.
  • Cross-device tracking — we do not track users across devices.

7. Managing Your Cookie Preferences

7.1 Accepting Analytics Cookies

When you first visit the Service, you will see a cookie banner. You can click Accept analytics to enable Google Analytics cookies. The site works normally whether or not you accept.

7.2 Rejecting Analytics Cookies

If you do not want analytics cookies, click Reject. No analytics data will be collected, and the Service will continue to function normally.

7.3 Withdrawing Consent

You can withdraw your consent at any time. Click the Cookie preferences button displayed on the website, then click Withdraw consent. When you withdraw:

  • We immediately deny analytics_storage in Google Consent Mode.
  • We delete any Google Analytics cookies (cookies beginning with _ga) on your device.
  • Analytics data collection stops immediately.

7.4 Re-accepting After Withdrawal

If you change your mind after withdrawing consent, click the Cookie preferences button displayed on the website and click Accept analytics. Analytics cookies will be re-enabled for future page views.

8. Browser Controls

In addition to the controls we provide, you can also manage cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to:

  • View and delete existing cookies.
  • Block cookies from specific sites.
  • Block all cookies (though this may prevent some sites from functioning correctly).

Note that blocking essential cookies will prevent you from signing in to your account.

9. Cookie Retention

  • Essential cookies are retained for the duration of your browsing session.
  • Google Analytics cookies (when accepted) are retained according to Google's default settings and are deleted when you withdraw consent or clear your browser cookies.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time. Material changes will be notified on our website. A version history with summaries of changes is available on this page.
