Remembering Gregory John Davidson

Their Story

I am a web developer, entrepreneur, driving instructor, photographer and lifelong problem solver with a passion for preserving the past while building practical solutions for the future.

Born and raised in the Scottish Borders, Greg has spent much of his life serving others. He completed 29 years of service in the British Army, predominantly with the Royal Engineers and the Adjutant General’s Corps, retiring as a Regimental Administrative Warrant Officer (WO2). During his military career he developed a reputation for organisation, leadership and mentoring—qualities that continue to shape everything he does today.

Following his military service, Greg became a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor, combining technical expertise with a genuine passion for coaching people. Rather than simply teaching pupils to pass a driving test, he focuses on creating safer, more confident drivers through modern coaching techniques and continual professional development.

Away from driver training, Greg has embraced technology and entrepreneurship. Through Greg’s Apps, he designs websites, web applications and digital solutions for small businesses, community organisations and specialist industries. His projects range from business management systems and instructor software to tourism platforms, sports management tools and educational resources. His philosophy is simple: create software that solves real problems without unnecessary complexity.

Greg has a deep affection for the Scottish Borders, its history and its people. That passion has inspired projects highlighting castles, abbeys, walking routes, photography locations and local heritage. He enjoys exploring historic sites, flying drones, photography, laser engraving and woodworking—interests that blend creativity with craftsmanship.

Family history has become one of Greg’s most personal projects. Following the passing of close family members, he has dedicated countless hours to preserving their memories through websites, digital archives and written histories. His work celebrating the poetry of his grandfather, Warwick Woodhead, has ensured that future generations can discover and enjoy his published works. Similar projects honour other members of his family, preserving photographs, stories and achievements that might otherwise have been lost.

Greg is equally passionate about giving something back to the community. As Secretary of the Cross Borders Driving Instructors Association, he helps organise professional development and encourages collaboration between instructors. He also continues to develop initiatives aimed at supporting learner drivers, improving road safety and providing affordable digital tools for instructors.

What perhaps defines Greg most is his curiosity. He enjoys learning new skills, whether that’s coding a new application, researching family genealogy, restoring old photographs, creating historical websites or mastering new technology. He believes that every problem has a solution if you’re willing to learn enough to find it.

Friends and colleagues know Greg as someone who enjoys helping others, often quietly working behind the scenes to make things happen. Whether building a website for a local business, restoring a treasured family photograph, preserving a relative’s legacy or mentoring a new driving instructor, his aim is always the same—to leave things a little better than he found them.

At the heart of everything Greg does are three enduring values: service, family and legacy. His projects are not simply about technology or business; they are about connecting people, preserving memories and creating tools that continue to benefit others long into the future.

Played my first game of Rugby

In Primary 6 we played our first game against St Boswells Primary School and a return match at Edenside Primary school.

August 1977

Won the Scottish Borders 7 a side competition.

In primary 7 we represented Edenside Primary School in the Scottish Borders 7 a side competition which we won. The picture is taken from the Kelso Chronical and I remember the day that picture was taken we went to every classroom in the school to show off our trophy.

September 1982

Joining the British Army

My first job after leaving school was at Border Precision in Kelso. However, I had already been accepted into the British Army and officially began my service on September 7, 1982. I went on to serve in the Army for 29 years.

Won the German National Rugby Championship (Deutcher Meister)

Being part of my German Club, Deutcher Rugby Club 1905 Hannover, playing tight head prop, we won the German National Championship. This is in the top list of my life achievements, especially being that I was the first Scotsman to do it. Although the photo is not from that day, I think it is from that season.

Left the Army after my 22 years of Service

I became a veteran on my 40th birthday the 1st February 2006 after being discharged with an exemplary service record on 31 January 2006. What to do next?
